BERNARD THE BUMBLEBEE - A TRUE STORY

Bernard the Bumble Bee had two problems - one, he had been born with only 5 legs which meant he flew in circles and had difficulty collecting pollen.  He was, apart from that, a handsome bumblebee with a fat furry body and bright intelligent eyes.  But despite his kind nature, he was teased at school.

His second problem was that, because he played truant, he tended to go out looking for pollen before the flowers blossomed.  He would emerge into a chilly world where the daffodils were still in bud and the trees bursting to open waited for the first warm rays of sunshine.

Bernard would shiver, his stripey fur coat only just thick enough to keep him from freezing and he searched (in circles of course) or some pollen before returning home disappointed.

His mother, Betty the Bumblebee, driven to despair by her son's unhappiness had him fitted with a false leg made of an old pin she had found and for several days Bernard was able to fly in a straight line and make a safe landing.  This didn't last long, of course, the false leg dropped off and Bernard returned home (rather indirectly) with a heavy heart.


Betty was convinced that the cold air would go to Bernard's chest as he had always been a wheezy baby and she decided to share her concerns with Dr. Bertrand BB who looked directly into her eyes and said "Have you told Bernard recently that you love him".  She shook her head and holding the Doctor's prescription which read "Tell Bernard you love him every night and listen to his feelings" she went home.

Bernard continued to fly in circles but although the teasing continued he became a confident and happy Bumble Bee.

Foutoux replies to Bernard the Bumblebee's problem

Dear Foutoux

My son Bernard the Bumblebee was born with only five legs.  He had a lot of difficulty at school because his friends made fun of him because he flew around in circles.

Fortunately, we were able to get him a false leg but one day when he was pollinating an iris it fell off and was lost and we don't have enough money to replace it.  Bernard has become very depressed.  What can you advice?

Dear Betty

I was sorry to hear that Bernard had become depressed.  You have to reassure him that despite the fact that he only has five legs he is precious to you and you love him just as much.  We often don't tell our children we love them enough.
